Winter Light

I ran into Crazy Carl down at the bean today. I was writing a comment on a blog as he rounded the corner; it seemed to me that his jeans had even more patches than I previously remember. I have come to believe that Carl loves his jeans more than he loves most people and will forever sew on a new patch rather than suffer any separation from them.

We talked for a couple of hours, Carl and I. The conversation looping around back onto itself, Carl repeats himself often. I have never minded this part of him, the repeating, because in the circles of his mind a gem will eventually fall out if I am patient. Today’s gem, “try not to fill your days up with the things you think will make you happy, rushing here and there, because” he said “have you ever really enjoyed anything when you were not relaxed, so give yourself some space and enjoy less things more”.

I like that piece of advice and will try to heed it.

I will try to heed it too. Sometime soon I plan on sorting out the things I no longer need. Now that I think about it I better start before November as I will be too busy writing!
